Generative AI is a type of artificial intelligence that can create a wide variety of data, such as images, videos, audio, text and 3D models. It does this by studying patterns from existing data and then using that information to create new and unique content that looks realistic and complex, almost akin to what a human can create. It has been a valuable tool for product design, game development, and various entertainment.
Recently Adobe has been incorporating AI driven capabilities for its multimedia creation tools to make the workflow easier. One case is Adobe Sensei, which uses AI and machine learning to help make informed decisions and target marketing for better results. Their latest attempt is in the form of Adobe Firefly.
Adobe Firefly is the new family of creative models coming to Adobe products, focusing on image and text effect generation using the power of generative AI. Unveiled during the Adobe Summit in March 2023, Firefly will offer new ways to ideate, create and communicate while improving the creative workflows of designers and developers alike.
Currently, there are two features available in the beta version of Firefly:
Text to image: Much like Midjourney, Text to image allows designers to create illustrations and digital paintings by typing a text prompt. There are options to change the style, lighting, color, tone and composition of the work.
Text to effects: Using text prompts to create various styles and effects to text. The designer can control the amount of effects used on the text. ( Loose for more flowing effects, and Tight for less amount of effects).

Recolor Vectors: Creating color variations of your vector artwork from a detailed text prompt.
Extend Image: Changes the aspect ratio of your image.
Inpainting: Using a brush to add, remove or replace items with an image. Generate the fill with a text prompt.
Smart Portrait: Changing the facial expressions of a person in a photograph
Depth to image: Taking an image and text prompts and combining them together to create a new image.
3D to image: Using text prompts to generate images from the interactive positioning of 3D elements.
Text to Template: Designers can type detailed text prompts to generate templates that can be edited for later use. It can be used for quickly making posters and cards.
Conversational editing: Designers interact with an AI chatbot by typing the prompts, and the chatbot will produce the image with the necessary changes.
Text to Vector: Designers can generate editable vector graphics from detailed text descriptions. It is also possible to export the image to other platforms such as Adobe Photoshop and make additional edits from there.
Combine Photos: Creating designs by combining elements from a selected amount of images
Color conditioned image generation: A color palette is generated by uploading several images. Then designers can create a new illustration with that color palette.
Image upscaling: Using AI to render low resolution images to make them high quality.
Personalized results: Generating images based on your own objects or style.
Text to Pattern: Using detailed text descriptions to generate seamless tiling patterns.
Text to Brush: Artists can generate brushes for Adobe Photoshop and Fresco using text prompts.
Sketch to image: Using AI to turn simple drawings into full color images.
Video editing: Another work in progress feature to bring Generative AI for video editing, by typing prompts to change the lighting, adding music and sound effects and generating storyboards for videos and animations.
Adobe Firefly is one of the newest cases to show us that AI has been improving very quickly and efficiently. It has several interesting and promising features that help save time and money for designers while also delivering high quality results by simply using text prompts!
